Four foetal membranes enclose the developing embryo.  These are also called the extra embryonic membranes:Amnion: It is a thin membrane that encloses a fluid-filled sac, the amniotic sac.  The fluid is called the amniotic fluid.  It protects the embryo.  Ionic exchange takes place between the mother’s blood and embryonic body.
