Symptoms and Forms of Age Related Macular Degeneration

One of the leading causes of lost sight in those 65 and older, is age related macular degeneration of which there are two forms. One is called wet, which causes a much more rapid loss of vision, especially the central point. One symptom is seeing wavy lines when they should be straight. The wet is considered more severe than the dry form which has symptoms of a gradual blurring and reduction in the sharpness and overall clarity of objects. In addition, it will become more difficult reading fine print of newspapers or other media. Because symptoms are gradual and painless, many do not seek treatment until major damage has already been done. This is why it is so important to make regular appointments for eye exams. The optometrist has the skill and training to detect the disease and prescribe treatment before it becomes too advanced.
