Interesting Facts About Parachutes
Parachute was recognized as a sport in the 1960s when parachutes were specifically designed for sports. The new sports parachute offered more stability and horizontal speeds. In 1911 two parachuters, Grant Morton and Captain Albert Berry, claimed to be the first to jump from an airplane with parachutes.
In 1914 Georgia “Tiny” Broadwick made the first free fall jump. Amelia Earhart made the first jump from a tower in 1935. Parachutes were folded and packed into a backpack by Paul Lettermen Kathchen Paulus in 1890. Robert Cocking was the first fatality in parachuting in 1837. The first idea of parachuting came from Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches.
